Usually it starts with the bill: $14.99 a month, or $829.99 once, for software. Roon is a good product, and some of the people reading this should keep it. This page is the map we would want handed to us: every real alternative, what it costs, and who each one is actually for.
Households that already run Plex for video, and anyone on Android.
A genuinely good player with mixes built from analysis that runs on your own server. It plays to one output at a time, needs a Plex account, and music shares the company's attention with films.
One listening chair, one very good DAC.
More care about the signal path than anyone: parametric EQ, convolution, DSD. It sends audio to a single output, so it answers a different question than a whole-house server does.
Tinkerers with Squeezebox hardware, or the patience to build the modern equivalent.
The community continuation of Logitech's old server, and the closest free thing to true multi-room sync. You assemble and maintain it yourself, and the interface shows its age.
People happy to self-host a streaming server and pick a phone app for it.
Navidrome, Jellyfin and the other open servers stream your files to a family of compatible apps. Solid single-listener streaming; multi-room sync and rich metadata are not what they are for.
Houses where the music you own plays in more than one room.
Every speaker, computer, phone and browser becomes a zone, in sync or apart. The library reads like a record collection, with booklets, composers and labels, and mixes are built from your own records on your own machine.
Keep it if you lean on its DSP, if your hardware is Roon Ready and chosen for that, or if streaming services are half your listening. Nothing on this page replaces those three things well, including us.
If instead the bill is the problem and your own records are the point, that is the case we built for: yamsap and Roon, side by side.
Yamsap is $6.99 a month, or $5.99 paid yearly. It runs on a Mac today, Apple silicon or Intel, and Linux and iOS are close.
