What the money is for.
Yamsap runs on your hardware and streams from your own disks, so it is fair to ask what keeps costing money after you install it.
- The lookups
- Artwork, credits, biographies, label histories and release dates come from music databases that cost money to use at any scale. Your server asks them once per record and keeps the answer.
- The listening
- The nightly pass that rebuilds your mixes and radio runs on your own machine, and its ear for a record keeps getting better.
- The way back in
- Remote access gives your server an address of its own so the library opens when you are away from home. That address is handed out and kept alive by a service we run.
- The work
- Yamsap is one company's whole job. The subscription is what pays for the next version rather than a one-time payment that has to last forever.
Questions about the money.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Yamsap stops playing. Your music is untouched where it has always been, in the folders you organised, in the formats you chose, and any other player on earth can open it tomorrow. Nothing about your collection is locked to us, because yamsap never held it in the first place. Start the subscription again later and your playlists, favourites and listening history are still there.
- Does it need to phone home to keep working?
- It checks in once a day when it can, and it keeps playing for a month without reaching us at all. A week off the internet, or a router that gave up while you were on holiday, does not stop the music.
- How many rooms does one subscription cover?
- All of them. The price is per server, and one server drives every zone in the house. There is no charge per speaker, per room, per phone, or per person listening.
- Can I move it to a different machine?
- Yes, whenever you like. One server runs at a time; activating a new one hands the subscription over and asks you to confirm. Replacing a dead machine at eleven at night does not involve writing to us.
- Is there a lifetime option?
- No. Lifetime pricing is a bet that the company outlives the money, and the usual way that bet gets settled is the lifetime price going up for everyone who has not bought one yet. We would rather charge a small amount every month and keep earning it.
- What do I actually save by paying yearly?
- 14%, which is twelve dollars a year. The yearly plan is $71.88 once, against $83.88 if you pay $6.99 every month. We price the monthly plan at what the work is worth rather than inflating it to make the yearly one look generous.
- Can I switch between monthly and yearly?
- Yes, at any renewal. Nothing about your library, your playlists or your zones is tied to which plan you are on.
